Soweto is a sprawling black township with a complicated history. A metropolis of more than 3.5 million people on the outskirts of Johannesburg and is a multi-cultural composite of South Africa today. The tour includes a full view of Soweto from the vicinity of Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, view of the Orlando cooling towers; Regina Mundi's Church; Hector Pieterson Museum; Nelson Mandela's family home and a typical Shebeen. We enter Soweto and pass through Baragwanath Hospital, the largest hospital in the southern hemisphere. Stop at Regina Mundi Church; one of the biggest Catholic churches in South Africa and the focal point of much of the struggle in the 70's and 80's and home to the famous Black Madonna and Child painting. This church is also known as “The Parliament of Soweto”.
After this we arrive at The Hector Pieterson Museum in Orlando west which is a short way from where police opened fire on students on 16 June 1976 unleashing the Soweto Uprising.
Finally we go to Mandela’s House in Vilakazi Street; the only street in the world where two Nobel Prize winners lived: Nelson Mandela & Desmond Tutu. The first thing you see when you turn on to the street is the house in which Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu still lives.
